CBP Detector Dog Breeding Program
In 1998, the Canine Enforcement Program
established a detector dog breeding program to maximize the number of
dogs suitable for detection training. The program, modeled after the
Australian Customs Service program, has bred 19 litters to date. The
CBP breeding program strives to develop Labrador Retrievers that are
ideally suited for detection work. CBP dogs are bred and cared for in
state of the art facilities until they are approximately 12 weeks old.
The puppies are then socialized and raised by "Foster
Families" until they are about a year old. This program relies on the
local community, around the Canine Enforcement Training Center, to
raise the puppies in foster homes. In 2003, the Canine Enforcement
Program expanded this effort by utilizing the Puppies Behind Bars
program at selected prisons to enhance the foster program.

Once they are ready, they
return to the CETC to begin their new career!
